Final value fee on the total, not just the item price

A $48 item with $6.50 charged for shipping brings in $54.50 total from the buyer. eBay's 13.25% final value fee applies to that full $54.50, not just the $48 item price -- plus a $0.40 per-order fee, for total fees of $7.62. After also subtracting your actual $5.20 shipping cost and $18 item cost, net profit comes to $23.68, a 49.33% margin on the sale price.

Charging for shipping doesn't dodge the fee the way sellers sometimes expect -- since FVF applies to sale price plus shipping charged, quoting a lower item price with higher shipping charged to the buyer results in roughly the same total fee, not a lower one.

The gap between what the buyer paid ($6.50 shipping charge) and what shipping actually cost ($5.20) is a small $1.30 buffer here -- overestimate shipping charged to buyers by too much and it can hurt conversion; underestimate it and it quietly erodes margin on every sale.

What changes this fee rate

Illustrative FVF. Category and promoted-listing rates change. Not an eBay invoice. eBay's final value fee varies by category -- some categories run several points lower or higher than a general 13.25%, and eBay Store subscription tiers can also change the effective rate.

Promoted Listings fees (an optional ad-placement cost, typically a percentage of the sale when a promoted listing results in a sale) stack on top of the standard FVF and per-order fee, and aren't included in this calculation.

This models a single item; sellers with high volume should confirm their actual blended fee rate on eBay Seller Hub rather than assuming the category default applies uniformly.

Comparing eBay to other resale platforms

The same sale on Mercari or Poshmark carries a different fee structure entirely -- compare against the Mercari Fee & Net Earnings Calculator or Poshmark Sales Profit Calculator for the same item.

If shipping cost itself is the uncertain input, the Product Packaging & Box Shipping Weight Calculator estimates billable weight before you quote a shipping charge.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does eBay's final value fee apply to the item price or the total including shipping?

The total. FVF is calculated on sale price plus shipping charged to the buyer: ($48 + $6.50) x 13.25% = $7.22, plus the $0.40 per-order fee, for $7.62 total fees. Charging more for shipping and less for the item doesn't reduce the fee.

How is the $23.68 net profit calculated?

Total received ($54.50) minus fees ($7.62), minus your actual shipping cost ($5.20), minus item cost ($18) = $23.68.

Is 13.25% the actual rate for every eBay category?

No. Illustrative FVF. Category and promoted-listing rates change. eBay's final value fee percentage varies by category, and some categories carry a different rate structure entirely. Check your specific category's current rate on eBay's seller fee page.

Are Promoted Listings fees included in this calculation?

No. Promoted Listings is a separate, optional ad fee (typically a percentage of the sale, charged only when the promotion leads to a sale) that stacks on top of the standard final value fee shown here.

What if I lose money on shipping (charge less than it actually costs)?

That gap comes straight out of net profit. If shipCost (your actual cost) exceeds shipChg (what you charged the buyer), the difference reduces margin directly -- this calculator reflects that automatically since both figures are separate inputs.
