Why Etsy "profit" is usually overstated

Sellers subtract COGS from the listing price and call the rest profit. Etsy charges a listing fee, a percentage of the whole order (item plus shipping you billed), a card-processing cut, and sometimes Offsite Ads. Postage you actually pay is a fourth leak if it does not match what the buyer paid. Miss any one of those and a $35 sale can look fat while the bank deposit is thin.

Revenue = item price + shipping charged
Listing fee = $0.20
Transaction fee = revenue x 6.5%
Processing = revenue x rate + fixed fee
Offsite ads = revenue x ads rate
Net profit = revenue - COGS - actual shipping - all Etsy fees
Margin = net profit / revenue

Defaults: $35 item, $5 shipping charged, $10 COGS, $4.50 postage, 3% + $0.25 processing, no ads. Revenue is $40. Fees are $0.20 + $2.60 + $1.45 = $4.25. Profit is $21.25 (53.1% margin, green). Turn on 15% Offsite Ads and ads take $6.00. Profit drops to $15.25.

Shipping charged vs postage you pay

Etsy fees the $5 you collect. You then spend $4.50 to ship. The $0.50 spread looks like extra profit until you remember transaction and processing also hit the $5. Free-shipping listings push the item price up and still pay 6.5% on the whole ticket. If actual postage exceeds shipping charged, that gap comes straight out of margin. Raise the charged amount or the item price, do not hope Etsy ignores it.

Processing defaults match common US Etsy Payments (3% + $0.25). Other countries use different rates. Edit the two processing fields rather than assuming the US pair. Listing auto-renew still costs $0.20 per 4-month listing even if the item never sells. This calculator applies $0.20 to a completed sale so you price as if the listing fee is recovered on that order.

Reading the margin bands

Over 25% is green, 10% to 25% is yellow, under 10% is red. Negative net profit overrides the band: the profit figure turns rose, the pill reads Unprofitable, and an alert states the sale loses money after fees and costs. A 9% margin on a $12 item is a few cents of error away from red. Copy exports every input, each fee line, total fees, profit, and margin as plain text for a listing worksheet.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What fees does Etsy take on a sale in 2026?

This page models a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on item price plus shipping charged, plus Etsy Payments (US default 3% + $0.25). Offsite Ads add 15% (or 12% high volume) when the order is attributed to those ads. Defaults on a $35 item with $5 shipping: listing $0.20, transaction $2.60, processing $1.45, ads $0, total fees $4.25.

Does Etsy charge transaction fees on shipping?

Yes. Transaction and processing fees apply to total revenue (item + shipping charged to the buyer), not item price alone. If you charge $5 shipping and spend $4.50 to ship, you still pay fees on the $5, then subtract the $4.50 as a real cost.

How do Offsite Ads change the margin?

Offsite Ads Standard is 15% of order total. High volume shops that qualify pay 12%. On the $40 default order, 15% is $6.00 extra. Net profit falls from $21.25 to $15.25 and margin from 53.1% to 38.1%. Leave the control on No if the sale is organic.

What profit margin should an Etsy seller target?

This page treats over 25% as green, 10% to 25% as yellow, and under 10% as red. Negative profit forces an Unprofitable pill and a warning alert. Handmade and vintage shops often need the green band because ads, returns, and slow weeks eat the rest.
