Exclusive adds tax on top; inclusive backs it out

B2B quotes are usually tax exclusive. Shelf stickers in many countries are tax inclusive. The toggle tells the calculator whether your input amount already contains tax.

Defaults in exclusive mode: $100 net, 20% rate. Tax = 100 x 0.20 = $20.00. Total with tax = $120.00. Flip to inclusive with $120 gross: net = 120 / 1.20 = $100.00, tax = $20.00.

Copy exports mode, input amount, rate, net, tax, and total.

Tax sits between discount and take-home

Markdown math is pre-tax. Run the Discount & Sales Price Calculator first, then pass the sale price here if the receipt must show VAT or GST.

Freelancer quotes often need tax on top of day rate. The Freelance Hourly Rate Calculator sizes the rate; this page splits tax on the invoice line.

Marketplace sellers report net and tax separately on some platforms. Margin tools like the Shopify Profit Margin Calculator focus on fees and COGS; add tax compliance in your own books.

One rate, one amount, instant split

Mixed-rate carts (food vs alcohol, reduced VAT SKUs) need more than one line. This page is one rate on one number for back-of-napkin checks.

Rounding: results show cents. Your POS may round per line; a penny drift on a $9.99 item is normal across systems.

Rerun when the rate changes (policy update) or when switching between quoting net vs gross to a client.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the difference between tax exclusive and inclusive?

Exclusive: you enter the net (pre-tax) amount; tax = net x rate / 100; total = net + tax. Inclusive: you enter the gross (tax-included) amount; net = gross / (1 + rate / 100); tax = gross - net. Defaults: $100 exclusive at 20% = $20 tax, $120 total.

What happens at 0% tax rate?

Tax is $0. Exclusive mode: net equals input, total equals input. Inclusive mode: net equals gross, tax is $0. The formula avoids division issues at 0% in inclusive mode by treating net as gross.

Which amounts are validated?

Amount must be 0 or more. Rate must be 0 to 100. Invalid inputs show an alert, n/a results, and disabled copy.

Can I use this for US sales tax?

The math is the same for any single flat rate. US state and local tax is often compound and address-based; this page is one rate on one amount. Use it for quick splits, not filing.
