Follower ER is the number brands can audit

A media kit that quotes "8% engagement" without a denominator is not usable. Brands divide public interactions by public followers because they can check both without Insights login. This page uses that formula. Reach-based ER is a different, usually smaller, number. Keep them labeled. Defaults: 25,000 followers, 850 likes, 45 comments, 30 saves. Engagements = 925. Rate = 3.70%, graded High Engagement.

Engagements = likes + comments + saves/shares
ER % = engagements / followers x 100
Like:comment = likes / comments

If follower count is 0 or blank, calculation stops and an alert asks for a valid count. The copy button is disabled until the rate is defined. Average at least 9 recent feed posts. One viral Reel will lie about the account.

Grades and the industry comparison

Under 1.0% is Low / Below Average (rose). 1.0% to 3.5% is Average / Healthy (amber). 3.5% to 6.0% is High Engagement (green). Over 6.0% is Viral / Exceptional (indigo). Macro accounts often live in Low because follower counts include years of dead weight. Nano accounts often print High. Compare inside a size band. The comparison sentence on the results card states which band you are in and what "typical healthy" means (1.0% to 3.5%).

Like-to-comment ratio on the defaults is 18.9 to 1. Giveaways spike likes and comments together. Pods spike likes with thin comments. Neither proves a buying audience. Saves are the line item brands actually want for products and education. If you cannot see saves, leave them at 0 and say so in the pitch.

How this sits next to TikTok ER

TikTok brands often want view-based ER because the For You page is not the follower graph. Instagram still sells community, so follower ER remains the default. Use the TikTok Engagement Rate Calculator when the brief is short-form video. Copy here exports followers, the three averages, engagements, ER, grade, ratio, and the benchmark sentence as plain text for a rate card.

Do not mix Stories, Reels, and feed into one average unless the brief says so. A Reels-only ER will not match a grid ER. Pick the surface the brand is buying, average that surface, and paste the summary. Recalculate after a purge of ghost followers: ER will jump without any new talent, which is the point of the cleanup.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do you calculate Instagram engagement rate?

Total engagements = average likes + comments + saves/shares. Engagement rate = engagements / followers x 100. Defaults: 850 likes, 45 comments, 30 saves on 25,000 followers = 925 engagements and 3.70% ER, graded High Engagement.

What is a good Instagram engagement rate in 2026?

This page grades under 1.0% as Low / Below Average, 1.0% to 3.5% as Average / Healthy, 3.5% to 6.0% as High Engagement, and over 6.0% as Viral / Exceptional. Larger accounts usually sit lower. Compare yourself to your size band, not a nano creator.

Should I include saves and shares?

Yes if you have Insights. Saves and shares are stronger buying signals than likes. If you only have public likes and comments, set saves to 0. The rate will look lower, which is honest for a media kit that a brand can verify without login.

What does like-to-comment ratio tell you?

Likes divided by comments. Defaults: 850 / 45 = 18.9 to 1. A very high ratio with almost no comments can look like a like-pod. A low ratio with real questions is often more useful to brands. If comments are 0, the ratio is n/a.
