Standard posts allow 280 characters for most accounts. This counter treats each BMP character as 1 and each astral symbol (many emoji) as 2, matching common X behavior for basic posts.

What do the color states mean?

Green "Within limit" when more than 20 characters remain. Amber "Almost at limit" at 20 or fewer remaining. Rose "Over limit" when used characters exceed 280. The primary card border turns rose when over.

Are t.co links shortened in this counter?

No. Whatever you type is counted literally. X may shorten URLs server-side to 23 characters when posted. Leave room manually if you paste long query strings.

Does this count words and lines?

Yes. Words split on whitespace after trim. Lines count newline characters plus one. Defaults: 59 characters used, 221 remaining, 11 words, 1 line.

Do emoji count as two characters on X?

This counter walks UTF-16 code units and counts a surrogate pair (most emoji and many symbols) as 2 toward the 280 limit, which matches how X weights those glyphs for standard posts. ASCII letters count as 1. Premium longer posts are not modeled; the hard stop on this page is 280.

Does the counter compose a thread for me?

No. It counts one draft. Maxlength on the box is 560 so you can see how far over 280 you are, then split the thread yourself. Line count and word count are extras for pacing; they are not X limits.
